When ‘Export to Excel’ Doesn’t Work

The “Export to Excel” feature that’s been in many Microsoft Dynamics 365 versions is a useful tool that allows users to export the contents of a form grid to an Excel workbook. This feature allows users to get specific AX data into a spreadsheet format where Excel functions can be used. Some users also may be more comfortable and familiar with using Excel for data analysis.

When Dynamics 365 for Operations is installed, there may be some unseen difficulty when first trying to use Export to Excel. For some users, the dropdown from the Office icon in the D365 toolbar may only show “No options” when clicked:

If you encounter this, navigate to System Administration > Setup > Office app parameters:

Once the form loads, on the “App parameters” tab, click the “Initialize app parameters” button and accept the pop-up message. After the process completes, there’ll be a new record in the grid with an App ID:

Close your browser and reload the Dynamics 365 for Operations environment. The Export to Excel functionality now will appear when clicking the Office icon on the D365 toolbar in the internet browser:

Note:  In some instances, the browser may need to be closed and reopened twice after initializing the app parameters for the Export to Excel feature to properly function.

How to Handle Inactive Employees on PTE Timesheet Status Report

The impending solar eclipse surely indicates something spooky’s happening in the cosmos. It’s affected my life by way of three different Microsoft Dynamics GP clients all moving from Business Portal (PDK) to the built-in Employee Self-Service and Project Time and Expense (PTE) functionality of GP 2016 R2.

Learn more about the new Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016 R2:  Project Accounting PTE Timesheet Status Report here.

The report is a pivotal part of managing PTE timesheets and a welcome improvement to the PTE module. However, there’s a glaring problem that makes it impossible to use in larger GP implementations. The PTE timesheet status report pulls all employees regardless of their active/inactive status. Right now, there’s no way to filter the inactive users from the report. My clients obviously weren’t happy with Microsoft’s out-of-the-box solution.

After some research, I located the stored procedure used in generating the report. A quick modification will allow you to restrict the report to active employees. Be sure to have backups anytime you directly make changes in structured query language (SQL). The name of the stored procedure and added SQL code are listed below.

stored procedure : PTE_FillTimesheetWFStatusData

Dynamics GP Upgrades Lead to Missing Navigation List Data

We recently had a great day in the Rockies, but missed that standard Colorado sunshine. Coincidentally, a few of my Microsoft Dynamics GP clients also missed the standard Project Time and Expense (PTE) functionality of their systems.

Three separate upgrades with three unique upgrade paths to get to Microsoft Dynamics GP 2016R2 led to the same results:  missing Employee Self-Service PTE Expense Navigation Lists—see the graphic below. Our troubleshooting determined the Navigation List data was missing from the SY07220, SY07221, SY07222 and SY07225 tables. The scripts to recreate the data and restore Navigation List functionality can be found below.

insert into SY07220 (ListDictID,	ListID,	ViewID,	ViewName,	CompanyVisibility,	IsShared,	RoleSharing,	UserSharing,	CRUSRID,	CREATDDT,	MDFUSRID,	MODIFDT,	DefaultViewID)
values( '258',	'958',	'2',	'Not Submitted', '2',	'1',	'0',	'0',	'DYNSA', '2016-05-24 00:00:00.000',	'sa', '2016-05-24 00:00:00.000',	'3')

Using Excel Refreshable Reports in Dynamics GP

A Microsoft Dynamics GP feature that isn’t hidden but also often isn’t used is refreshable Excel reports. These reports give users the ability to view GP data using Excel without exporting data using SmartList. The data is live, and reports can be refreshed to view new and updated data. This webinar will demonstrate how to use and create these reports.
